Sample interview answer: Tell me about yourself

This is the time to sell yourself, this can be seen a broad question, but your response should be specific and targeted. What does the interviewer want to know when he/she asks this question. Has this person got the skills, experience and knowledge to do this job? Has this person got the right attitude (will they fit in, do they have a can do approach, do are they flexible).

You need to make sure answer in the affirmative to all these questions– and in all your answers during the interview.

Specifically you need to know what skills, experience, knowledge etc they are looking for. The job description and person specification will tell exactly what they are looking for. Your response should take about 2 minutes.

Prepare a script and then practice saying it until you have it down pat. Practise until you can deliver an answer which includes all your key points. That is when answering make sure you cover the main headings in the person specification e.g experience, skills, and traits etc

Example answer
e.g. I 've been an administrator for the last five years. (Experience) My recent experience includes handling incoming calls, taking minutes (skills) I excellent written and spoken English, advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and strong keyboard skills. (traits) I am a strong team player; I work well in a team on and on my own. I have strong integrity and I'm honest.

Give examples
Try to give examples of each skill, experience etc you’ve stated. E.g regarding the experience of minute taking you could say “On a weekly basis I would prepare agenda’s, circulate minutes, and take minutes at the monthly committee meetings"
